Video shows more than 100 people on bikes, motorcycles taking over I-93 lanes on Sunday

Over 100 people on bicycles and motorcycles rode down I-93 Sunday, surveillance footage shows.
The riders caused southbound afternoon traffic on St. Patrick's Day Sunday.

Video footage released by the state Department of Transportation showed more than 100 people on bicycles and motorcycles weaving through cars on Interstate 93 on St. Patrick’s Day, snarling traffic on a holiday afternoon.

The footage, released on Tuesday, showed a throng of riders heading south on the highway near the Albany Street on-ramp around 2:25 p.m., according to John Goggin, a spokesperson for the state transportation department. Some riders popped wheelies or stood up on their pedals before speeding away, the footage shows.

Goggin said officials had no information about how long the cyclists were on the highway or why they were there.

A sign at the on-ramp “clearly indicates” cyclists are not allowed, Goggin said. The sign has a picture of a bicycle with a red mark through it, along with red marks through a person walking and a person on horseback.

In 2018, a woman was caught on video riding through the O’Neill Tunnel on a Bluebike. In 2023, five bicyclists did the same, weaving through cars on a five-lane section of the highway.
